Meet John J. Gobbell

John J. Gobbell ~ Author

"Gobbell’s sea tales featuring Commander Todd Ingram will have you looking up your nearest Navy Recruiter." W.E.B. Griffin "

The majesty and drama of America's struggle against Imperial Japan has seldom been as powerfully and authentically evoked as in John J. Gobbell's flank-speed story of a great submarine chase across the Pacific. I was hooked from the very beginning." James D. Hornfischer

U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) Men’s Glee Club visits Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Newport Beach, California, singing the Navy Hymn and the Battle Hymn of the Republic

In 2017, yours truly was able to get into my church which has a capacity of about 1,100. It was a sell-out crowd; the place was packed.

I sneaked up to the front row which, for some reason, was nearly empty. Thus, I was able to record these fine young men close up with an unobstructed view.

Dr. Aaron Smith, Director, Musical Activities Chairman, USNA Music Department is the one here who briefly introduces the Navy Hymn (Eternal Father) and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Amazing. Two of my favorites. How can you go wrong? In my entre lifetime, I never thought I would have such an opportunity; but here it was. Carpe diem.

And as you watch, please recall that almost all these midshipmen have since graduated and now serve in our Fleet. I’m told this performance is a public service so it’s here for all of us to enjoy.
